What is the StarGuard IDC?
The StarGuard ELITE Instructor Development Course (IDC) is designed to prepare StarGuard Instructors to provide a quality education program for lifeguards, using experiential activities based upon adult learning principles, and an emphasis on understanding and utilizing effective facilitation skills. The Instructor Development process includes an online self-study course and a face-to-face course conducted by SGE Faculty. Instructor candidates will review proper rescue techniques that can be used in a variety of aquatic settings and the most effective ways to educate new and experienced aquatic rescue personnel.
The StarGuard Instructor Development Course (IDC) is designed to train new StarGuard Instructor candidates, cross-over existing lifeguard instructors from another agency, reauthorize StarGuard Instructors, and upgrade Instructor status.
What are the prerequisites to attend a StarGuard IDC?
The first step is to complete the registration form. The registration fee for the IDC includes the online self-study course. The StarGuard Instructor Guide, StarGuard Lifeguard Student textbook, and Training Center Administrative Manual (T-CAM) are available in a digital format through the online self-study course. After you complete the registration process, you will receive an email with instructions on how to access the online self-study course from SGE eLearning. You must successfully complete the online portion of the training prior to attending the face-to-face course. Please print and bring the completion transcript with you to the face-to-face course.
At the face-to-face course, you must demonstrate that you have swimming skills adequate for your personal safety during the class and to perform physical rescue skills. The minimum screening includes:
What is the agenda for the IDC?
The IDC is based upon the core skills of the StarGuard curriculum that include Prevention, Surveillance, Response and Rescue, Emergency Care, and Workplace Expectations. The curriculum is designed to be customized to meet the needs of the audience. The following agenda may be modified during the course to facilitate meeting the learning objectives.
